EQUINE SALE IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER
The 4th annual Los Alamitos Equine Sale is set for Saturday,
October 4 and Sunday, October 5. Check the news and notes page for the
latest on the Los Alamitos Equine Sale.

Ramiro Villarreal Tostado and his son, Ramiro
Villarreal, purchased the stallion Make It Anywhere (Hip
#70) for $230,000 on Friday afternoon, making the son of First
Down Dash and out of the Broomare of the Year and Dam of Distinction
Seperate Ways the high seller on opening day of the 2007 Los Alamitos
Equine Sale. The first day of the sale consisted strictly of the
Francisco Gonsalez's dispersal featuring Hip #1 through
70. The sale resumed on Saturday, October 6 at 9:30 a.m. with Hip #71
through #351. Hip #352 through 631 entered the sale ring on Sunday,
October 7 also beginning at 9:30 a.m.
The Villarreals
reside in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon in Mexico. They have campaigned several
horses over the years in the United States, including Conner Can, a stakes
winner at both Delta Downs and Remington Park of more than $130,000.
They've also raced horses at Los Alamitos, including the allowance winning
five-year-old mare A Rare Cartel and the 2-year-old winners Corona Roque
and Sweet Separation.
"My father is
planning to move to San Antonio and he wants to own a horse ranch there,"
said Villarreal. "We feel that Make It Anywhere is an excellent investment
and we're looking forward to marketing this horse in the years to come.
Heath Taylor trains our horses in Texas and when I discussed this horse
with him he said that Make It Anywhere has great potential as a stallion.
The thing that we loved about him is that he has an outstanding production
percentage and his racing record and bloodlines are first
class."
The
Villarreals have not decided where Make It Anywhere will stand in 2008.
"We're going to look at different options and make a decision from there.
We are very excited to own an outstanding horse like Make It Anywhere,"
Villarreal concluded.
Jorge
Haddad of Seguin, Texas purchased the broodmare Callin
Baton Rouge (Hip #6) for $200,000 to make her the second high
seller on the day. The 14-year-old Callin Baton Rouge is a half sister to
champions Tres Seis and Dean Miracle and Broodmare of the Year Fortune Of
Delight, who is the dam of champion and All American Futurity winner A
Delightful Dasher and champion Hes My Dasher. Callin Baton Rouge is the
dam of the stakes placed horse New Chaos.
"Callin Baton
Rouge has tons of class and will make a fine addition to my broodmare
band," said the owner of Haddad Ranch, formerly Moehrig Ranch. "Mr. Allen
Moehrig operated the ranch for 30 years and I've owned it for the past
three years. Mr. Moehrig raised Special Effort, Dashin Is Easy, Eyesa
Special and many more great horses at this ranch. I'm hoping that I can
continue on that great tradition. Right now I have the stallions Moon
Shake, Newarco, Lil Bit Cuervo and Ihavepromises Tokeep. We do a lot of
embryo transfers at the ranch and we have over 300 mares a
year."
Jaime Gomez signed the ticket for $150,000 on the
stakes winning broodmare Velvet Meter (Hip #33) to make
her the third highest seller. Velvet Meter is the dam Velvetins, who is
racing in the Grade 1 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity on Saturday. She's also the
dam of three-time winner Dont Meet Me Im Gone. Velvet Meter's family
includes stakes winners Firstdown Touchdown and Fighter On Fire.
Haddad purchased the Streakin La Jolla weanling filly
Likelittlelili (Hip #38) for $60,000. Out of the Ronas
Ryon mare Terra Cotta Red, Likelittlelili is a full sister to Like Frankie
And Me, a winner of $435,414 and a runner-up in the 2005 Champion of
Champions and 2004 Golden State Futurity. Like Frankie And Me also
finished third in the '05 All American Derby.

Gonsalez was
thrilled with the figures following the completion of the dispersal sale.
"What I love is that the sale was extremely well run," he said. "I'm very
happy with how smooth things went. I'd like to thank Dr. Ed Allred,
Vessels Stallion Farm and the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing
Association for assisting in conducting this dispersal. I'm not retiring
forever; I'm just taking some time off to concentrate on another business
venture. You'll see me in Quarter Horse racing once again."

John Andreini and Benny Rosset purchased the Corona Cartel colt
Balboa Bay for $140,000 to make him the high seller on
day two of the Los Alamitos Equine Sale.
Consigned by
Lazy E Ranch Inc, Agent for Deer Creek Holding Co.,
Balboa Bay (Hip #267) is the first foal out of the First Down Dash mare
Strawberry Dash, who ran fourth for David and Susan Mackie in the Southern
California Derby and fifth in the Los Alamitos Derby. A full sister to
two-time champion Stoli and 2005 All American Juvenile Stakes winner
Rousing Encore, Strawberry Dash won four races in her racing career for
earnings of $68,850.
"Balboa Bay is a great looking colt and I knew his dam well," said
Danny Cardoza, the ranch manager at Andreini's ranch and Los Alamitos'
all-time leading Quarter Horse jockey in wins. "Strawberry Dash broke my
ribs when I was breaking her as a 2-year-old. She was a talented runner but she
some bad racing luck; otherwise she would have made a lot more money. We
believe she has great potential as a broodmare and you can't go wrong when
you have Corona Cartel as the sire."
Moonlight Corona, a half sister to champion Your
First Moon and Grade 1 El Primero Del Ano Derby winner Not A Full Moon,
was the day's second highest seller at $105,000. Ed
Allred purchased the daughter of Corona Cartel out of Moon
Arisen. Consigned by Vessels Stallion Farm LLC, Moonlight Corona is also a
half sister to Los Alamitos Million and Rainbow futurity finalist Sunset
Dash. Meanwhile, Your First Moon earned over $750,000 while winning the
Los Alamitos Million Futurity and Governor's Cup Futurity. She was named
champion 2-year-old and champion 2-year-old filly in 2001. Not A Full Moon
has banked $231,777 in his racing career, which includes the El Primero
victory. He finished second in the Governor's Cup Derby and third in both
the PCQHRA Breeders and Golden State derbies.
"Everything out of Moon Arisen runs," said Fred Scane, the stallion
manager of Allred's Rolling A Ranch. "The bloodlines on Moonlight Corona
are extremely impressive and we're looking forward to her racing career.
She'll be an outstanding addition to the Rolling A Ranch's broodmare band
as well."

Andreini was involved in several of the big money buys on day two
of the sale. Andreini also purchased Tara Tiara (Hip
#117) for $85,000 and Jess Racy Eyes (Hip #96)
for $75,000. Tara Tiara was day's fifth highest seller, while Jess Racy
Eyes was the seventh highest seller.
"Tara Tiara is an outstanding individual," Andreini said. "She
looks classy and she's very pretty."
"Her
dam is the Thoroughbred mare Natural Vallentine, who produced All American
Futurity runner-up Flys R Droppin by Strawfly Special," Cardoza added.
First Down Dash sired Tara Tiara, who is also a half sister to
stakes winner Unbreak My Heart and Grade 2 derby finalist Royal Domain.
Jess Racy Eyes is a filly by Mr Jess Perry out of the Mr Eye Opener mare
Miss Racy Eyes, a winner of the Speedhorse Gold & Silver Cup Futurity
and a Remington Park derby finalist.
"We
purchased Jess Racy Eyes because she's from the same family as Runaway
Vike, who we own," Cardoza explained. "Runaway Vike is the dam of (Los
Alamitos Winter Championship winner) Volcom. This whole family is
outstanding."
Andreini's strong presence as a buyer was one of the many pleasant
surprises at Los Alamitos Equine Sale. "John has been selling a lot of
babies over the years as part of the Schvaneveldt/Andreini Sale," Cardoza
said. "He's decided that he wanted a few more horses to run next year,
plus he really wants to support the Los Alamitos racing program and those
million dollar futurities."

Jose Flores signed for two high selling Corona
Cartel yearlings on day two. Flores purchased the colt Significant
Corona (Hip #232) for $95,000, and the filly Neon Cartel
(Hip #121) for $80,000. They were the third and sixth highest
sellers on Saturday.
"The breeding on these horses is what attracted me to them," Flores
said. "With Corona Cartel you know you're going to get some fast, fast
horses. You have to try to go with the best whenever
possible."
Significant Corona is out of the champion 3-year-old filly and
champion aged mare Significant Speed, who won the Rainbow and Dash For
Cash derbies plus the Refrigerator Handicap. Significant Corona is a half
brother to 2004 La Primera Del Ano Derby winner So Significant. Out of the
mare Neo Classic, Neon Cartel is a half sister to Remington Park
Championship and Heritage Place Derby winner Deposit Cash.

(Hip #101) by Feature Mr Jess and out of the Light On Cash mare LS Honey
Brown for $13,500. LS Honey Brown is the dam of Los Alamitos'
300-yard track record holder Runnin Ramped.
Johnston owns a farm located near Houston, Texas. "We don't have a
single Quarter Horse in the farm just yet," Johnston said. "We're just
getting started. I had Quarter Horses many years ago but I've not owned
one in over 20 years. Steve Williams is my son-in-law and he's won some
big races in New Mexico and he remains involved in the sport. I've been
working overseas and I recently retired from the oil business. I've been
looking forward to becoming involved in Quarter Horses once again. I plan
to race my Quarter Horses all over the country next year and eventually
raising horses at my farm."
