2008 Los Alamitos Equine Sale

Edward C. Allred

When a young Ed Allred first walked through the gates at Los Alamitos Race Course in 1956 there was certainly no reason to foresee the impact of the moment on both his life and on the history of California Quarter Horse racing. In 1956 Allred was simply a racing fan who had taken a day off from his law studies at USC to visit Los Alamitos after reading in The Racing Form that one of the horses competing that day was owned by the Allred Brothers.

The Allred Brothers turned out to be no relation, but from that first visit to Los Alamitos a lifelong relationship began between the track and the young visiting student.

It has been a long and varied journey for Allred from that first visit to Los Alamitos to his present position as Owner and CEO of the track and the nation's all-time leading breeder of racing Quarter Horses. Included in that journey was the purchase of his first horse, a gelding named Beowawe; a stint in the Army Medical Corps that included a tour in Vietnam; the purchase of an Atascadero, California breeding farm previously owned by the actor and Quarter Horse breeder Robert Mitchum and the purchase of a promising 2-year-old filly named Charger Bar who would go on the make her mark as one of the greatest mares to ever grace the track.

From his Rolling A Ranch, Allred has raised a record number of stakes winners including the Champions Way Maker, Separatist, Hawkinson and Hawkish. His 2008 runners include stakes winners Ten Oclock Scholar, Really A First, Forgive Him and Dreaming Sweet. He is also the co-owner of 2008 Ed Burke Million Futurity winner Foose.

A nine-time recipient of the AQHA Champion Breeder Award and a six-time winner of the AQHA Champion Owner title, Allred was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame in March 2007, fittingly joining the Allred Brothers who were recently honored with their own Hall of Fame induction. Allred was inducted into the Ruidoso Downs Racing Hall of Fame in 2008.

While Allred has certainly made his mark on the Quarter Horse world as an owner and a breeder, it is his position as the owner of Los Alamitos Race Course that has had the most dramatic impact on the sport. Under his direction Los Alamitos Race Course has not only maintained its position as the citadel of Quarter Horse racing, the track has taken a more prominent role in the sport by offering year-round racing and a stakes program second to none in the industry.

In 2005, Los Alamitos earned the distinction of becoming the first track in the country to annually offer three $1 million races. Never one to rest on his past laurels, Allred then announced that the prestigious Champion of Champions would also offer a $1 million race, making it the sport's only race for older horses to feature a seven-figure purse. Allred has since announced that starting in 2009, Los Alamitos will be the first and only track in the country to annually offer five $1 million races - with the $1 guaranteed Los Alamitos Super Derby joining the Champion of Champions, Ed Burke Million, Golden State Million and Los Alamitos Two Million futurities. The feat is a crowning achievement for Allred and the entire California Quarter Horse industry.

In February of 2008, Allred celebrated his 10-year anniversary as sole owner of Los Alamitos. "And I'm looking forward to many more years of racing Quarter Horses at Los Alamitos," Allred added.
